FAQ about spotting scopes

When to use a spotting scope?

Spotting scopes have been invented for the more comfortable observation of various objects, located far away from the observer. The main purpose of the scope is to monitor the remote or small objects from as close as possible. For example, birds or animals, or target in a shooting gallery, compact models are suitable for hunting and safaris.

What is design of the spotting scopes?

Spotting scope may be composed of the following things:

  • the eyepiece,
  • the lens,
  • porro system,
  • roof system,
  • Galileo system.

It should be noted that most modern scopes have a water-resistant coating, so that they can be applied even in very wet weather. When choosing a scope, one should pay attention to the type of construction, the location of the optical unit, focus type and the presence of a tripod.

What are the types of spotting scopes’ construction?

  1. Spotting scope Porro

The prisms here are arranged so that the lens axis and eyepiece axis are not aligned. On the one hand somebody may consider this to be a drawback, since the scope becomes headroom. On the other hand, a greater distance between the lens gives three-dimensional image. The loss of light in the whole system of prisms is equal to zero (without light absorption by glass).

  2. Spotting scope Roof

Spotting scopes Roof: lens, prism and eyepiece are aligned, so that the scope’s design is generally more compact. Roof system gives an image of the same quality as a Porro construction and the scope is much more expensive.

  3. Spotting scope Galileo

This construction is very simple. Telephoto lens is a converging lens and diverging lens is the eyepiece. The ratio of the focal length to the focal length of the eyepiece is an increase of the Galilean tube.

Which accessories are necessary?

For maximum comfort observation you will definitely need: a tripod, a set for cleaning the optics, as the eyepiece lens can collect dirt, photo adapter - if you are fond of taking pictures.

Can spotting scopes be used as the night-vision devices?

Definitely yes! Night Vision Devices are widely used for:

  • hunting,
  • night fishing,
  • tourist outings,
  • used by the military and security structures.

NVD allows to navigate the terrain, drive a car, fly, hunt, watch the animals or birds at night. Entering through the lens light is amplified electronically and transmitted to the screen that you see through the eyepiece.
